iWe understand that not everyone knows what to expect when going into surgery, so we make every effort to guide each of our patients through the process so that they have the best experience possible. Our highly trained surgery team is dedicated providing state of the art care to all patients. This includes pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Person Memorial Hospital’s surgical services include general surgeries, gastrointestinal procedures, orthopedic surgeries, ophthalmic surgeries, and ear, nose and throat surgeries.
While most procedures are scheduled in advance, our surgical team is available 24/7 for emergency services.
For scheduled procedures, we ask that patients come in to meet with a pre-operative team to prepare for surgery. The team reviews the patient’s medical and surgical history, current medications, and performs any medical tests required prior to the surgery date. The surgeon’s office staff will schedule the pre-op visit and notify patients of their appointment date and time. The hospital registration process is started at the time of the pre-op visit, so patients should bring insurance information.
Following surgery, patients who will need to spend the night at the hospital will be taken to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit prior to being taken to the Medical/Surgical Unit. Patients who have undergone an outpatient procedure will spend their recovery time in the Same Day Surgery unit before going home.
Before leaving the hospital the surgeon and care nurse will go over the post-operative instructions with the patient. This is a time for patients to have any questions or concerns addressed, and written copies of these instructions are provided. One to three days after an outpatient procedure a surgery team member will call the patient for a follow up and to ask them how they would rate the care they received. For patients who stay in the hospital during their recovery, the discharge planner will provide the follow up visit.
