Laboratory Services

Results are available via a computer to your physician as soon as the tests are completed. The Laboratory is certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is directed by a board-certified pathologist.

The pathologist processes tissue samples from physician offices and the hospital’s surgical suite to diagnose the presence or absence of diseases. Additionally, the Laboratory offers health care services in chemistry, hematology, blood bank and microbiology.

Chemistry

Tests for such things as blood sugar, heart disease, cholesterol, triglycerides, kidney functions, pregnancy, therapeutic drug monitoring and thyroid disease.

Hematology

Lab tests include red and white cell count and platelet count, urine analysis, blood clotting, and sickle cell screening. Tests may also rule out certain diseases such as mononucleosis, rheumatoid arthritis and syphilis.

Blood Bank

Performs tests, determines an individual's blood type and prepares blood for transfusions as requested by the physician.

Microbiology

Tests for microorganisms such as bacteria and parasites, in addition to cultures done on blood and other body fluids.

Person Memorial Hospital Laboratory acts as the clinical training site for phlebotomy students from Piedmont Community College and Medical Laboratory Technicians from Alamance Community College.
